This year’s forum will update stakeholders on various aspects of radon, including:

  • Radon monitoring, including the use of electronic monitors
  • Building mitigation
  • Radon and geology
  • HSE activities
  • Presentations from representatives of The Radon Council and UK Radon Association

There will also be an option to tour the UKHSA radon calibration/validation/inter-comparison facility or to attend a ‘Radon Basics’ presentation.

The day starts at 09:30 for the basics presentation or lab tour, with the main programme at 10:00.  The final session is scheduled to finish before 16:00.  A buffet lunch will be provided.

By road

UKHSA is one of several occupants of the Harwell Campus which is to the west of the A34 dual carriageway, 14 miles south of Oxford and 14 miles north of Newbury.

  1. Visitors travelling north should leave the A34 at the A4185 intersection and follow signs to the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory and Harwell Campus.  The Campus entrance is marked with yellow and green signs on the roundabout with the satellite dish (the road sign says HPA).  Take the first exit.

Visitors travelling south have two choices:

  1. Leave the A34 at the A4130 intersection, following the signs for Wantage. At the Rowstock roundabout (with Nissan Garage) take the second exit, signposted to Chilton.  Keep on the main road, ahead at the traffic lights, and right at the roundabout with the satellite dish marked Fermi Entrance.
  • Leave the A34 at the A4185 exit to Chilton/Harwell Campus, and follow the signs on the next three roundabouts to Harwell Campus.  The Campus entrance is marked with yellow and green signs on the roundabout with the satellite dish (the road sign says HPA).  Take the first exit.

Take the first exit from the mini-roundabout into Fermi Avenue and the second exit at the 4-way roundabout with the colourful, circular artwork.

The UKHSA building is near the end of Fermi Avenue, beyond the Atlas Centre, Ridgeway House and Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, and before the Medical Research Council (MRC) units.

There is a visitors’ car park next to the Training Centre – go over the speed bump and follow the road round to the left.  Parking is free all day.  Please inform the Training Centre reception of the vehicle registration number on arrival.

If the Training Centre car park is full, see the map attached to the email for an alternative at the back of the building.  You will need to go back on to Fermi Avenue, turn right and follow the road as it sweeps around, and follow to the end.

NB There are currently no charging points for EVs.

By rail and/or bus

UKHSA at Chilton is about 7 miles from Didcot Parkway station, which has frequent connections with London (Paddington), Birmingham, the west of England and South Wales. Taxi services are available from the station.

There are frequent bus services to the Harwell site. Exit the bus by the Diamond Synchrotron. Walk in the same direction as the bus for 100 metres and UKHSA is on the opposite side of the road.

UKHSA at Chilton is one hour from London (Heathrow) Airport.  There is a RailAir link service to Didcot Parkway station, via Reading.

Course booking Terms and Conditions

  1. All course fees are payable in full at time of reservation unless agreed otherwise.
  2. A refund of 60% of the amount paid will be made in the event of receipt of written cancellation at least FOUR weeks prior to the date of the course. No refund can be made on cancellation thereafter.
  3. If a candidate cannot attend the course on the agreed date, the candidate may be able to attend the next identical course. If they miss this next identical course, they cannot attend another without the payment of course fees. 
  4. Substitution of delegates (from the same company/firm) can be made at any time prior to the start of the course.
  5. In the event that a course is oversubscribed, The Radon Council reserves the right to place candidates on the course as the course fee is paid. When the course is full, the remaining candidates will be moved to the next suitable course. 
  6. All course documentation is provided solely for the private training and study purposes of individual delegates. Copyright is reserved on all material prepared and provided by The Radon Council.
  7. The Radon Council reserves the right to make any alterations to course arrangements necessitated by circumstances beyond its control.
