Unfortunately, the scale of the issue will take time to resolve, so it is note worthy that the prison service is utilising considerable recourses to mitigate the radon risk. Under UK regulations all employers must review the potential radon hazard in their premises. Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, the employer bears the principal responsibility to ensure the health and safety of employees and others. Protection from exposure to radon at work is specified in the Ionising Radiations Regulations 1999. Therefore, it is incumbent on employers to put appropriate safeguards in place to protect their workforces. It is known that the HSE is looking into the situation at the prison.

The radioactive gas radon is a hazard in many homes and workplaces. Breathing in radon is the second largest cause of lung cancer in the UK resulting in over 1000 fatal cancers per year. However, radon hazards are simple and cheap to measure and relatively easy to address if levels are high.

Course booking Terms and Conditions

  1. All course fees are payable in full at time of reservation unless agreed otherwise.
  2. A refund of 60% of the amount paid will be made in the event of receipt of written cancellation at least FOUR weeks prior to the date of the course. No refund can be made on cancellation thereafter.
  3. If a candidate cannot attend the course on the agreed date, the candidate may be able to attend the next identical course. If they miss this next identical course, they cannot attend another without the payment of course fees. 
  4. Substitution of delegates (from the same company/firm) can be made at any time prior to the start of the course.
  5. In the event that a course is oversubscribed, The Radon Council reserves the right to place candidates on the course as the course fee is paid. When the course is full, the remaining candidates will be moved to the next suitable course. 
  6. All course documentation is provided solely for the private training and study purposes of individual delegates. Copyright is reserved on all material prepared and provided by The Radon Council.
  7. The Radon Council reserves the right to make any alterations to course arrangements necessitated by circumstances beyond its control.
