Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institute Conference 11.03.2027

Radon in the environment: assessing concentrations, strategies for control, and insights into its behaviour.

An exciting conference on radon in the environment will be held in Bath on Thursday, the 11th of March 2027. We aim to inspire delegates and offer networking opportunities for academics and industry professionals.

Why Bath and radon? Radon’s precursor, radium, was famously discovered in Bath’s thermal springs in 1903. This led in 1912 to the discovery of radium emanation (radon) in and from the waters by Sir William Ramsay (FRS). At one point, radon was regarded as a possible explanation for the healing properties of the Bath Spa waters. Ramsay’s validation of “radium emanation” in the waters led spas and doctors to market Bath as a premier radioactive healing destination. This led to the creation of a Radium Inhalatorium, where patients could inhale radon. A Bath baker even advertised radium bread. Bath Spa water advertisements in the 1920s and 30’s promoted the waters’ radioactivity.

The scope of Air encompasses the following research areas:

– Air quality for health and comfort.

– Air pollution and source characterisation.

– Air purification and control techniques.

– Air management, policy control, monitoring, and modelling.

– Air–human interaction and sustainable development.

Air will publish papers submitted to the journal with submissions by the 29th of March 2027 for a Special Issue on Radon in the Environment. We would encourage presenters at the 2027 conference to consider submissions to the journal, which is a peer-reviewed international journal. Papers submitted will therefore go through the journal’s peer-review process.

This will be a hybrid event, with presentations being available online at the time of the meeting.

Fees.

The aim of the meeting charge is to cover costs. This is a not-for-profit event. Hence, the fee for in-person and online attendance will be £50. This will include teas and coffees provided throughout the day. Attendees will need to organise their own lunch. Being in central Bath, surrounded by venues, this is not difficult.

Travel and Parking.

The Bath Spa Train station is a 13-minute walk (0.6 miles) from the venue. Taxis are readily available at the station if required. The nearest car park is Charlotte Street car park, 0.2 miles away, which is a 4-minute walk. There are disabled spaces in the car park nearest the exit and the venue.

This conference in Bath offers a highly suitable venue in a compact, highly walkable, world-class historic setting. The city is well-connected to London and Bristol.

22nd National Radon Forum

This year’s forum will update stakeholders on various aspects of radon, including:

  • Radon monitoring, including the use of electronic monitors
  • Building mitigation
  • Radon and geology
  • HSE activities
  • Presentations from representatives of The Radon Council and UK Radon Association

There will also be an option to tour the UKHSA radon calibration/validation/inter-comparison facility or to attend a ‘Radon Basics’ presentation.

The day starts at 09:30 for the basics presentation or lab tour, with the main programme at 10:00.  The final session is scheduled to finish before 16:00.  A buffet lunch will be provided.

Directions:

By road

UKHSA is one of several occupants of the Harwell Campus which is to the west of the A34 dual carriageway, 14 miles south of Oxford and 14 miles north of Newbury.

  1. Visitors travelling north should leave the A34 at the A4185 intersection and follow signs to the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory and Harwell Campus. The Campus entrance is marked with yellow and green signs on the roundabout with the satellite dish (the road sign says HPA).  Take the first exit.

Visitors travelling south have two choices:

  1. Leave the A34 at the A4130 intersection, following the signs for Wantage. At the Rowstock roundabout (with Nissan Garage) take the second exit, signposted to Chilton. Keep on the main road, ahead at the traffic lights, and right at the roundabout with the satellite dish marked Fermi Entrance.
  2. Leave the A34 at the A4185 exit to Chilton/Harwell Campus, and follow the signs on the next three roundabouts to Harwell Campus. The Campus entrance is marked with yellow and green signs on the roundabout with the satellite dish (the road sign says HPA).  Take the first exit.

Take the first exit from the mini-roundabout into Fermi Avenue and the second exit at the 4-way roundabout with the colourful, circular artwork.

The UKHSA building is near the end of Fermi Avenue, beyond the Atlas Centre, Ridgeway House and Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, and before the Medical Research Council (MRC) units.

There is a visitors’ car park next to the Training Centre – go over the speed bump and follow the road round to the left.  Parking is free all day.  Please inform the Training Centre reception of the vehicle registration number on arrival.

If the Training Centre car park is full, see the map attached to the email for an alternative at the back of the building.  You will need to go back on to Fermi Avenue, turn right and follow the road as it sweeps around, and follow to the end.

NB There are currently no charging points for EVs.
By rail and/or bus
UKHSA at Chilton is about 7 miles from Didcot Parkway station, which has frequent connections with London (Paddington), Birmingham, the west of England and South Wales. Taxi services are available from the station.

There are frequent bus services to the Harwell site. Exit the bus by the Diamond Synchrotron. Walk in the same direction as the bus for 100 metres and UKHSA is on the opposite side of the road.

UKHSA at Chilton is one hour from London (Heathrow) Airport.  There is a RailAir link service to Didcot Parkway station, via Reading.

The UK Radon Symposium

The UK Radon Symposium is being held on 23rd March 2023 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Reading. This biennial event is hosted by the UK Radon Association and brings together both public and private sector organisations to share the latest news, views and regulatory information relating to the control of radon gas in indoor environments. With revised radon potential maps having been released in December 2022, we are delighted to have speakers from both the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and BRE talking about the implications of the new maps for existing buildings and new developments. The Principal Specialist Inspector for Radiation at the Health & Safety Executive will also be speaking about HSE’s campaign to tackle non-compliance in schools and the regulator’s current policies in dealing with radon in the workplace. This year, the International Radon Measurement Association is also running a half-day workshop focusing on radon testing for workplaces the preceding day including ideas of creating a new protocol for the UK on this.

The European Radon Association (ERA) holds regular events. We publicise these events on our News page, and details are available on the ERA website.

Course booking Terms and Conditions

  1. All course fees are payable in full at time of reservation unless agreed otherwise.
  2. A refund of 60% of the amount paid will be made in the event of receipt of written cancellation at least FOUR weeks prior to the date of the course. No refund can be made on cancellation thereafter.
  3. If a candidate cannot attend the course on the agreed date, the candidate may be able to attend the next identical course. If they miss this next identical course, they cannot attend another without the payment of course fees. 
  4. Substitution of delegates (from the same company/firm) can be made at any time prior to the start of the course.
  5. In the event that a course is oversubscribed, The Radon Council reserves the right to place candidates on the course as the course fee is paid. When the course is full, the remaining candidates will be moved to the next suitable course. 
  6. All course documentation is provided solely for the private training and study purposes of individual delegates. Copyright is reserved on all material prepared and provided by The Radon Council.
  7. The Radon Council reserves the right to make any alterations to course arrangements necessitated by circumstances beyond its control.
